Altaf on the move to ‘cleanse’ party
* Dissolves Karachi, London Rabita Committees
Staff Report
KARACHI: In a surprising development, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Thursday dissolved the Rabitta Committees of the party in Karachi and London immediately and formed a seven-member provisional committee to oversee all party matters until tomorrow (Saturday).
The MQM chief made the announcement while addressing a meeting at Nine Zero. He said that the new coordination committee would be elected during the general workers’ meeting on Saturday at Jinnah Ground, Azizabad. He asked the new provisional committee to inform him about new administration committee at Nine Zero within 24 hours.
Later on, five more members – Muhammad Ashfaq Mangi, Gulfraz Khan Khattak, Yousaf Shahwani, Iftikhar Rindhawa and Mumtaz Anwar – were included in the provisional committee increasing the number of its members to 12. Sources said that the decision to dissolve the Rabita Committees is a continuity of decisions which, according to Altaf, are being taken “as part of the process of cleansing unwanted elements from the MQM”.
Altaf criticised the MQM Coordination Committee in a telephonic address for failing to act against those who “insulted” him. Altaf’s criticism of the committee was in relation to allegations by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan who held the former responsible for the murder of senior PTI worker Zahra Shahid Hussain.
