PPP pledges to support Nawaz for greater good
* Khursheed Shah says his party will not create hurdles for PML-N
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party says it has fulfilled its “promise because we believe in continuation of democracy. The party has scarified a lot for democracy and will keep striving to strengthen it.” This was stated by PPP nominated opposition leader in the National Assembly, Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah.
Former Chairman Public Accounts Committee of the National Assembly Nadeem Afzal Chan and Media Coordinators PPP-P Nazir Dhoki and Capt.(R) Syed Wasif were also present at the press conference.
Shah said the party has accepted the election results despite reservations, in the interest of democracy and the party will not erect any hurdles for the new government unless and until it feels that the public interest is at stake.
He said we had signed Charter of Democracy with PML-N and 80 percent of CoD was implemented. The PPPP will support the government in meeting challenges faced by the country. He said if the PML-N government completes its 5-year-tenure then no force will be able to even think of derailing democracy. He said that the party would cooperate with the government on national issues and the next five years will be every critical and important for the country.
The PPP leader further said the former coalition government took a stand against terrorism because the people of Pakistan deserve peace. It was unfortunate that the party was not allowed to campaign freely in the elections, he said. Highlighting achievements of previous government, he said that the NFC Award was given by the previous government and it is hoped that the new government will develop good relations with the provinces. He said the PPPP would support any amendments in the constitution if they are in the national interest.
“The PPP wanted fair and transparent elections but unfortunately they were not. It is very regrettable that Election Commission has announced that contempt proceedings will be initiated against anyone criticising the conducting of election by the ECP. This announcement by the ECP is upsetting. Election Commission is formed by the parliament and no one should challenge the parliament,” said Shah.
