Altaf shakes party; changes top guns

* MQM chief says he will not allow anyone to run an unjustified system in party in his presence

* Declares zero tolerance towards ‘enemies of society’

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Sunday announced a new 23-member Rabita Committee of the party and 10-member Karachi Tanzeemi Committee (KTC), their in-charges and members.

Addressing a large number of party workers, Altaf Hussain said that the party will prosper after the announcement of new organisational setup. “I will not allow anyone to run an unjustified system in the party in my presence. MQM has zero-tolerance policy for the enemies of society,” he declared and directed the newly announced deputy conveners and KTC members to treat the workers with affection. He added that workers should avoid the “Bachat Bazaar” system and if anyone is found involved in these issues he will be expelled from the party immediately.

Altaf said he hopes that the newly formed organisation of the party will take decisions on merit and do away with favouritism. He said a new era has started for the MQM in which workers will avoid corruption. Under the party shakeup, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Engineer Nasir Jamal and Dr Nusrat have been announced as the new deputy conveners of MQM Pakistan while the members include Amir Khan, Mustafa Kamal, Adil Khan, Wasay Jalil, Nasreen Jalil, Haider Abbas Rizvi, Kanwar Khalid Younus, Anwar Alam, Kawar Naveed, Nisar Pahwer, Dr Sagheer Ahmed, Muhammad Kamal, Yosuf Shahwari, Khalid Sultan, Mian Ateeq, Mohtarma Mumtaz.

Dr Nadeem Nusrat has been announced as the deputy convenor of MQM London, and Muhammad Ashfaq, Mustafa Azizabadi, Tariq Javeed and Muhammad Anwer have been announced as the members of the London Coordination Committee. The ten-member KTC will be headed by Dr Nadeem Ehsan, while Irshad Kamal has been nominated its joint incharge. Former deputy convenor Dr Farooq Sattar has been made incharge of the diplomatic and international affairs committee. Meanwhile, former Rabita Committee member Advocate Anis Ahmed has been stopped from carrying on party work and directed to stay home till further instructions. The party workers have been advised to cut off contact with him.

Saleem Shahzad, Raza Haroon and Asif Siddiqui are excluded from the new organisational structure of the party and workers have been directed not to contact them anymore. However, they will continue to perform their duties as party workers, MQM’s official website reported. This announcement was made by the interim coordination committee of MQM, which also said that “the process of the cleanliness is underway, while everything will be done according to the instructions of the MQM chief”.

According to media reports, speaking to the party’s workers via telephone from London at MQM’s headquarters Nine-Zero in Azizabad, the MQM chief reiterated that the party follows a policy of ‘no tolerance’ when it comes to organisational discipline. “There is no room for violators of party discipline,” he added. Speaking to party activists on Saturday, Altaf said that the complete reorganisation of the Rabita Committee and other departments of the MQM would require fifteen days to a month.

The MQM Rabita Committee also suspended the memberships of former MNA Shamim Siddiqui and UK-based activist Muhammad Ahsan over complaints that they had violated party discipline. The final decision to end their memberships or their restoration would be taken in light of further investigations. The Rabita Committee also said that it has no connection to any of the business matters either of them are involved in and does not take any responsibility either.

Altaf had on Thursday dissolved the Rabitta Committees and formed a seven-member provisional committee to oversee all party matters until Saturday. The MQM chief made the announcement while addressing a meeting at Nine Zero. Altaf criticised the MQM Coordination Committee in a telephonic address for failing to act against those who “insulted” him. His criticism of the committee was in relation to allegations by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan who held the former responsible for the murder of senior PTI worker Zahra Shahid Hussain. staff report/agencies
