MQM, ANP to sit on opposition benches

* ANP seeks debate in Senate on deteriorating law and order in KP

* MQM fields Syed Sardar Ahmed for slot of chief minister

ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: The Awami National Party (ANP), which has 12 senators, filed an application to sit on opposition benches in the Senate, while the MQM has announced it will sit on opposition benches in Sindh Assembly.

The ANP application, which was submitted by Senator Haji Adeel, read that the party’s members should be allotted opposition seats in the Upper House. The ANP, which ruled Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until the middle of March this year, also submitted an adjournment motion in the Senate for a debate on the law and order situation in the province. The adjournment motion was signed by Haji Adeel, Shahi Syed, Zahid Khan and Afrasiab Khattak and said that renewed acts of terrorism have made the law and order situation very disturbing and the matter be debated in the Upper House.

Talking to media persons ANP spokesman Zahid Khan said that his party would support PPP’s Syed Khursheed Shah as leader of the opposition in the National Assembly. Meanwhile, the MQM Rabita Committee announced the party would sit on opposition benches in the Sindh Assembly. The party has also decided to contest for the Sindh chief minister. Senior MQM leader Syed Sardar Ahmed has been nominated for the post. staff report/agencies
