Elections in Balochistan 90 percent fair: ECP

Staff Report

QUETTA: Acting Chief Election Commissioner Justice Tasaduk Hussain Jilani has said that elections in Balochistan were 90 percent free and fair, while the commission had received complaints from 10 percent of the areas regarding rigging.

“Judicial tribunals have been set up to address the complaints. The tribunals would conduct the hearings on a daily basis to tackle the complaints within 120 days,” he said. Jilani expressed these views while talking to the media on his arrival from Islamabad to Quetta, on Wednesday. He claimed that the turnout in Balochistan was high this time as compared to the past elections and credit goes to the Election Commission of Pakistan for conducting the most successful elections in the history of the country, and said that it fulfilled its constitutional responsibilities.

Jilani said that the recent elections had much importance for Balochistan and were a challenge for the election commission, but with the support of army, security forces, federal and provincial administrations the ECP held successful elections. Jilani said that the smooth functioning of democracy was linked with the rule of law and that it is a need of hour to raise political awareness among the people to strengthen democracy.
