Former NICL chairman Ayaz Khan Niazi arrested in mega land scam

ISLAMABAD: Former National Insurance Corporation Limited (NICL) chairman Ayaz Khan Niazi was arrested on Sunday after the Supreme Court’s directions in the mega land scam case. Ayaz Khan Niazi was arrested from the Supreme Court premises. A two-member bench of the apex court headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Mushir Alam heard the NICL corruption case.

Talking to Ayaz Niazi, the chief justice asked him if he owns a casino in Dubai and whether Makhdoom Amin Faheem appointed him. Ayaz Niazi told the court that while Amin Faheem appointed him, he does not own any casino.

The National Accountability Court (NAB) prosecutor told the court that the other accused Mohsin Habib Warraich still evades the grasp of law upon which the chief justice expressed annoyance and ordered the NAB to produce him immediately.

During the proceedings, Justice Saqib Nisar observed that action should be taken against Niazi in the NICL scandal. When he directed authorities to arrest the former NICL chairman, the bench was informed that the accused had been granted pre-arrest bail in NICL cases being investigated by the Federal Intelligence Agency (FIA).

However Justice Saqib Nisar noted that since the cases were transferred to the NAB, the bail had become ineffective. The court observed that Ayaz Khan can be arrested if the bail is not extended to the accountability court.

The bench also ordered for the immediate arrest of Mohsin Habib Warraich and directed the accountability courts in Karachi and Lahore to conclude the trial within two months against Ayaz Khan. The chief justice observed that Niazi lives in a two kanal house while his cars are also not registered in his name. He also directed the authorities to deal with Niazi as per the law.
