Pakistan Meteorological Department Forecasts ‘Above-Normal’ Monsoon Rainfall

Lahore: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued its monsoon outlook for the period from June to August, predicting normal to above-normal rainfall across most parts of the country.

During the upcoming monsoon season, most regions are expected to experience average or higher-than-average rainfall. Central and northern Punjab are likely to see a significant increase in rainfall.

The department also forecasts above-normal rainfall in southern Sindh and Balochistan. Meanwhile, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to receive normal rainfall.

According to PMD, higher temperatures could accelerate the melting of snow in upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Many areas are expected to experience above-normal daytime temperatures at the beginning of June, which will normalize following the onset of rainfall.

The monsoon season is also expected to bring thunderstorms and strong winds. The above-normal rainfall may lead to flooding in rivers and urban areas. There is also a risk of flash floods in hilly regions, including the Sulaiman Range. - The Express Tribune

The News adds: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Tuesday issued a fresh advisory, forecasting rain as intense heatwave conditions persist across the country.

The Disaster Management Authority, citing the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), said that a westerly wave is likely to enter western parts of the country from May 28 and is likely to grip the upper parts of the country on June 1.

The change in weather is expected to cause landslides which may affect roads and traffic.

"There is a risk of flooding in local rivers and canals due to rain in the upper areas," an NDMA spokesperson said, adding that local departments should remain alert for dealing with expected floods and landslides.

The district administration, the spokesperson added, has been directed to shift people living in slums to safer places.

"There is fear of damage to crops, electric poles and other structures due to wind," he said.

The statement added: "Tourists are advised to remain cautious during the spell and check weather updates before traveling."

According to NDMA, Punjab cities including Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, TT Singh, Jhang, Khushab, Sargodha and Mianwali will witness isolated rainfall from tonight till June 1.

Rian is also expected to drench cities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Malakand, Waziristan, Kohat, Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Bajaur, Mohmand, Karak, Khyber, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan and Kurram.
