Agitations, rallies pose no threat to democracy: PM

LAHORE: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, on Friday, said agitations and rallies posed no threat to democratic system, and if any political party resigns from assemblies, the vacant seats would be filled through bye-polls.

Talking to newsmen here he said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz wants to enjoy double ride, as its leaders while remaining in power in Punjab and in order to cover their bad performance, also want to play the role of opposition by criticising the federal government.

The prime minister said the masses, who were in favour of the continuity of current democratic system, will not become part of any conspiracy to derail democracy. He said the immoral remarks of Shahbaz Sharif against the constitutional position of the president during the recent rally in Lahore were not even endorsed by his own party.

To a question about the recent rally of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), the prime minister said the mass gathering in fact depicted a display of disappointment of people in the policies of the Punjab government.

He, however, said that since Imran Khan is new in politics, it would be premature to comment on his future. The prime minister said though the federal cabinet has given its approval for giving Most Favoured Nation status to India, the national interests would always remain the foremost priority of the government during trade negotiations with India.

Gilani said the present government believes in the supremacy of parliament and freedom of media and in this respect practical steps have been taken. The prime minister said Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) being a symbol of federation has full capabilities to retrieve the country from all challenges including the energy crisis and was taking effective measures in this regard.

He said since the PPP has always respected the mandate of political forces, others should also demonstrate tolerance and respect the feelings of masses.

Gilani said the appointment of Makhdoom Shahabuddin Qureshi as President of PPP in south Punjab was aimed at reorganising and further strengthening the party in the southern part of the province. app
