US gives a glad hand to Indo-Pak cowork vows
WASHINGTON: Welcoming the meeting between the Indian and the Pakistani Prime Minister in Maldives on the sidelines of the SAARC summit, the US on Thursday said co-operation between the two countries is going to benefit the region.
"We have said many, many, many times from this podium that we support constructive dialogue between the two countries," State Department spokesperson Mark Toner said at his daily news conference.
"You know, it is to the benefit of the region that these two countries cooperate more closely, both on the economic front but as well as on other issues. We see this as a win-win for the region," Toner said in response to a question about the meeting between the two Prime Ministers.
On the other hand U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert O. Blake, Jr. who also headed a delegation, to attend the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit hailed this development terming it a boon for the region.
Speaking to media Blake hailed Pakistan and India’s promising to open a "new chapter" in their fraught relationship at a next round of formal peace talks due to take place by the end of this month.
He welcomed Pakistan’s granting India the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status.
Coming to the core issue of militancy running amuck in the region he said that Pakistan must take stock of the terrorist outfits at the earliest for it was vital to the stability of the region.
