China hopes both countries will ‘overcome differences’

BEIJING: China on Thursday welcome a meeting between prime ministers of Pakistan and India on the sidelines of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit in Maldives. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said, “China always happy to see the contacts between Pakistan and India”. Spokesman Hong Lei expressed the views while responding to a question on the meeting between Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh. The prime ministers of two South Asian neighbours met in Addu on Thursday ahead of the opening of the 17th SAARC summit. Hong expressed the hope that both the countries would “overcome their current differences and improve their relations”. China, he said, being the observer state to SAARC since 2005 was actively participating in the organisation’s activities, adding that with cooperation and mutual trust “we develop firm and cooperative relations with SARRC”. app
