Opp’s unconstitutional steps won’t be tolerated: Gilani

* PM says govt’s reconciliatory policy should not be construed as weakness

* Opp free to bring no-confidence move against him or impeachment motion against Zardari

MANDI BAHAUDDIN: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Sunday said that unconstitutional steps of the opposition against an elected government would not be tolerated, and stressed that government’s reconciliatory policy should not be construed as weakness.

“The opposition may bring no-confidence move against me or an impeachment motion against the president if it has developed certain disliking against the both,” he said while addressing a public meeting after inaugurating public development projects at Phalia. The prime minister said Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) stood firm on its manifesto and the Charter of Democracy (CoD) as per the vision and philosophy of the Benazir Bhutto.

Gilani said the PPP would not shy away from serving the public and strengthening democracy and democratic institutions in the country. He announced to launch a country-wide ‘Carvan-e-Tameer’ from Phalia, Mandi Bahauddin, adding that he would go from Karachi to Khyber to launch development projects. The premier said the PPP government would fulfil all the promises Benazir Bhutto made with the people.

He asked the opposition to wait for the next general elections in 2013 instead of resorting to unconstitutional methods, and added that the PML-N was worried about PPP’s expected success in March 2012 Senate elections. Addressing the PPP workers and leaders in the public meeting, the prime minister said that PPP had always displayed tolerance and patience despite victimisation and persecutions at the hand of the political rivals and dictators. No political party had such courage and patience, he added.

Gilani said that the priority of PPP is supremacy of parliament and democracy. The PPP, he said, had brought record development in the country, and despite many problems progress is being made. He said that some people are giving dates for change, but they should come out from the fool’s paradise. “We came through vote and did not use any backdoor channel. People are with us and we have not any kind of trepidation. PPP would not tolerate any unconstitutional measure.”

PPP would face all the challenges with the power of the masses rather than the government machinery, he said, adding that the party’s critics must know that it had come into power through elections and not through back door. The PM said there was a thin line between accountability and revenge and PPP did not wish to usurp the rights of anybody through revenge. agencies
