Qureshi has written his ‘political obituary’: PPP
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdaus Ashiq Awan said on Monday that by resigning as a member of the National Assembly and quitting the PPP, Shah Mehmood Qureshi had written his ‘political obituary’ and political wilderness was his destiny. Talking to a news channel, the information minister said that the difference of opinion was the beauty of democracy and the PPP leadership had always welcomed positive criticism. But Qureshi has been targeting President Asif Ali Zardari and the government policies to only get political mileage, she added. She said that during his press conference on Monday he was reading a script written by someone else. She regretted that Shah Mehmood chose the day on which the House was adjourned after paying tributes to Madar-e-Jamhooriat Begum Nusrat Bhutto, to tender his resignation from the National Assembly. Dr Firdaus said that his resignation from the Assembly in such a manner was not less than a suicide attack on the democratic set-up. She said that the PPP leadership did not sack Shah Mehmood as it wanted the masses to know how people change sides for personal political gains. His remarks came within minutes after Qureshi announced his decision to quit the PPP and resign from the National Assembly. Governor Khosa dispelled the impression that Qureshi’s departure would harm the PPP in south Punjab. He said Qureshi had been changing loyalties in the past as well, adding that heremained as associate of Ziaul Haq. Khosa said that Qureshi wanted to leave the PPP after becoming nazim of Multan. “PPP is a large party. It will not be affected by any individual’s decision,” he added. PPP leader Raja Pervez Ashraf has termed former party leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s decision of leaving the party his personal decision. Many had left the party in the past but today no one knows where and how they are. While addressing a press conference outside parliament in Islamabad, Pervez Ashraf terming PPP an ocean, and said that it is not dependent on individuals. app/staff report.
