Nawaz wants committee to probe memo issue

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has demanded the chief justice of Pakistan that a high level committee be formed to expose the elements involved in writing a memo to former US joint chiefs of staff Admiral Mike Mullen. Talking to reporters at Model Town on Friday, he said that civil society, senior judges and members of the national and provincial assemblies should be the members of the committee. “Sovereignty of the country will be safeguarded at any cost and every attempt against it will be foiled,” Nawaz said. He said that the elements who have pushed the country into the abyss of despair and infamy deserved no leniency and must be awarded stern punishment. He said that despite the passage of six months, the report of the commission probing the Abbottabad incident had not been revealed which showed the ‘nefarious intentions’ of the federal government and other characters. He said that such elements couldn’t guide the nation in the right direction. He said that the so-called federal government and the commission constituted by it have swept every thing under the carpet. He said that public meeting in Faisalabad on Sunday (tomorrow) would be of vital importance in the history of the country. “Hussain Haqqani’s letter issue is a sensitive matter and it cannot be overlooked easily,” he said, adding that this is a question of national security and sovereignty of Pakistan. “The proposed committee be allowed 15 days to finalise its inquiry. The report be made public within this stipulated period. If the government does not do so then there is some thing wrong in the matter,” he said. About Hamza Shahbaz and Ayela Malik case, he said that the PML-N reviews such matters internally. There are so many such examples before the nation that the PML-N held its workers accountable. Membership of Haji Pervez was cancelled on the report of inquiry committee, he pointed out. Action was also taken against MPA Shumaila Rana when a case came to light against her, he said. staff report/ online
