Nawaz warns agencies to stop playing game
* PML-N chief says he can’t allow army and intelligence agencies to play any political role
* Says he has evidence that secret agencies are supporting a certain political party
FAISALABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif has said that he and his political party had a great respect for the Pakistan Army as an institution, but the army and intelligence agencies could not be allowed to play any political role.
“We have evidence that secret agencies are supporting a certain political party. The agencies round up people for public meetings of that political party. But we are political people and believe in the support of the masses, who will decide the political future of the country,” Nawaz said while addressing a public gathering at Dhobi Ghat ground on Sunday.
The PML-N chief delivered an ultimatum to President Asif Ali Zardari to conduct and complete inquiry into the controversial memo delivered to US Admiral Mike Mullen by Pakistan’s Ambassador to US Husain Haqqani within nine days, otherwise he would take the scandal to the Supreme Court. In addition to this, he said that his party would also file writ petitions from all four provinces and in Azad Jammu and Kashmir in this regard.
“A commission be constituted within two days to conduct a transparent inquiry into memo issue and it should be completed within nine days,” he said.
He said that the Pakistani envoy’s delivering of the memo and seeking the support of the US against the armed forces was a matter of shame.
He said, “The present regime wanted to put Pakistan’s army under the US control.”
“We won’t be part of such assemblies where the government refuses to listen to the voice of the elected representative,” Nawaz said.
He said that only his party could steer the nation out of problems caused by load shedding, unemployment and poverty, besides ensuring the country’s progress.
The PML-N chief accused President Zardari of selling out the country’s sovereignty only to safeguard its interests.
He warned that certain politicians were carrying forward the old game of agencies in the country, but the PML-N was conscious of their designs. He compared the current era to his tenure as a prime minister, adding that today industries were shutting down in the absence of gas and electricity, whereas industry had been growing and motorways were being made during his tenure.
He said, “Today India is far ahead of us, Sri Lanka is ahead of us. Had the PML-N government not been toppled, Pakistan could easily have become Asian tiger with the continuation of effective policies.”
About the assets declaration slogan of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, Nawaz said that those who talk of assets should also talk of nationalisation in the Bhutto tenure when the Sharif family’s industries were nationalised along with other industries. Nawaz said his father opened six more industries being a patriotic Pakistani.
Referring to Imran’s slogan of change, Nawaz said, “They talk of change, but PML-N already has brought a change.”
“We brought change when we set up motorways, when we opened new industries, when we raised the national flag by detonating six nuclear devices in response to Indian five tests, when we resisted six phone calls from Clinton,” Nawaz said. agencies.
