NA body approves National Commission for Women Bill
* Senators express dissatisfaction over rising police torture cases

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee on Human Rights (HR) unanimously approved the National Commission for Women Bill, 2011 with certain amendments and Ministry of Law was advised to vet the Bill as soon as possible.
The Bill was passed during 62nd meeting of the committee presided over by MNA Syed Mumtaz Alam Gillani on Friday. The committee was informed that the Commission would be independent having autonomous status with full financial and administrative powers. The committee appreciated Gillani for having opportunity to preside the both Bills (National Commission on Human Right Bill, 2008 and National Commission for Women Bill). The committee pledged to table the Bill in the next session of NA scheduled to be held on December 15.
In commemoration of 25th November as International Day of Violence Against Women, the committee appreciated constitution of the National Commission of Women Bill, 2011. Dr Attiya Inyatullah, Farahnaz Ispahani and other members appreciated the work of the members of NCSW and others who prepared and finished this Bill within the prescribed time. All members appreciated the services of Riaz Fatayna, chairman of the committee, for the cause of human rights.
The chair pointed out that a meeting under Asian Association of Parliamentarians was held in Bangkok with regard to male/boys preference society. He proposed to discuss the subject in the next meeting of standing committee.
“The Reproductive Healthcare and Rights Bill, 2010” has been referred to the standing committee for consideration, Dr Inyatullah informed the committee, adding, in this regard and subject to approval of the speaker a sub-committee under convenorship of MNA Jamila Gillani would be constituted to examine that Bill. MNAs Farahnaz Isphanai, Sabeen Rizvi, Nisar Tanveer and Kishwar Zehra will be members. The committee will submit report within 60 days.
The committee also discussed the increasing trend of police torture in the province of Punjab. The Punjab AIG Police informed the committee about the action taken against the responsible police officials involved in the torture and murder during the police custody.
