Pakistan rejects UAE request to withdraw Shamsi deadline

* President tells UAE FM deadline was given by the DCC

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan rejected a request by United Arab Emirates to withdraw its demand of vacating Balochistan’s Shamsi airbase, media reported on Monday.

The request was made by UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zeyed Al-Nahyan in a one-on-one meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari in the federal capital. The visiting foreign minister advised Pakistan to demonstrate patience till completion of investigations by NATO into the lethal attack.

According to sources, President Zardari rejected the request, arguing that the deadline to vacate Shamsi Airbase was ordered by the Cabinet’s Defence Committee. The one-on-one meeting of the UAE Foreign Minister with the president was followed by a delegation-level meeting. The president, during the meeting, highlighted the existing cordial and friendly relationship with the UAE and said that Pakistan greatly valued its bonds of fraternity with it and was keen to expand cooperation in various fields. agencies
