PM refers memogate scandal to parliamentary committee
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Monday referred the memogate fiasco to the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, which is likely to hold its meeting this week. The investigation into the memogate scandal, involving former ambassador to US Husain Haqqani, created a storm in the country leading to the resignation of Haqqani to face the inquiry into this matter. “It has been desired that the Parliamentary Committee on National Security may conduct a probe on the subject issue,” said an order of the Prime Minister’s Secretariat. According to it, the terms of the reference are “to probe into the memo purportedly written and sent by Mansoor Ijaz,” and “to give consequential recommendations” on the subject. Last week, a high level meeting of the top civilian and military leadership summoned the former ambassador where he had to explain his position viz-a-viz this diplomatic bombshell. Haqqani resigned from the ambassadorial post following the directives of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. The prime minister announced that the matter would be probed by a committee, the composition of which remained hidden with speculations kept on circulating on the working of the committee. staff report
