Senate body urges political parties to play role for peace in Karachi

ISLAMABAD: Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights met Senator Afrasiab Khattak in the chair on Friday, urging the political parties to play their role in bringing peace to Karachi, Geo News reported.

Those who attended the meeting included Director General Sindh Rangers Rizwan Akhtar, Additional Inspector General and its members Senator Raza Rabbani, Mushahid Hussain Syed, Nasrin Jalil, Barrister Farogh Nasim and Senator Farhatullah Khan Babar.

Speaking to media following the meeting, Khattak said that the committee called for legislation against illicit weapons and increase in police strength. He added that expelling illegal migrants from Karachi and legislation for protection of witnesses were also suggested in the meeting.

Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed said that the committee was told that as many as 8,5 00 people had been arrested with illegal weapons, who went unpunished.

He called for an increase in police powers and withdrawal of paramilitary forces for lasting peace in the country’s commercial hub.
