Election won’t be held under army’s supervision: ECP
ISLAMABAD: Additional Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Afzal Khan said on Monday that the next general election would be held under the supervision of the ECP and only assistance of other institutions would be sought if the need arose and that the army could be deployed at sensitive polling stations, Geo News reported.
During a media briefing, Khan said the ECP was in need of judicial officers and he hoped the need would be catered to.
He said that the overseas Pakistanis had been given the right to vote and in the next general election around 3.7 million of them could cast their ballots in Pakistan.
The secretary said that the ECP was busy in making arrangements for the election, adding that holding free and fair election was its top priority.
He said that number of votes would touch the figure of 90 million in May next year and the ECP had set target of 88 percent turn out for the election.
Afzal Khan said that turn out in rural areas was more than urban areas and the political parties should also play their role in addressing the issue.
