Chaos in Senate as Abidi speaks against judiciary
* PPP senator asks chair not to expunge his remarks against chief justice
ISLAMABAD: There was chaos in the Senate on Thursday after firebrand and outspoken Senator of PPP Faisal Raza Abidi created a scene when the chair expunged his words against top judiciary.
The House also echoed with concerns regarding the poor law and order situation and discussion about statements of the army chief and chief justice that all state institutions should confine to their constitutional domains.
At the end of session, which mainly discussed security situation in Karachi, Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan, Abidi rushed to the dice of Senate Deputy Chairman Sabir Baloch, who was chairing the session, to stop him from expunging his words against the chief justice.
“You can’t expunge my words. I will not allow you to do it,” an angry Abidi shouted by pulling the arm of deputy speaker who adjourned the session until today (Wednesday).
Giving indecent remarks against the chief justice, Abidi kept moving in the Senate hall even after the session was adjourned while his party colleagues and deputy chairman tried to cool him down. Although the deputy chairman asked Abidi not to speak against the chief justice “as rules don’t allow so”, the senator ignored Baloch and continued making derogatory remarks against the chief justice and judiciary. “Under which law, I have been stopped from appearing on TV talk shows. I don’t accept the verdict of Islamabad High Court,” Abidi said, referring to a decision of the court to check derogatory remarks against the judiciary.
He said the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) chairman should be summoned in the House and asked why all those TV channels, which air his talk shows, are being served notices.
“This is breach of my privileges as a senator,” Abidi said when the chair repeatedly asked him to refrain from speaking against the judiciary and limit his comments to the order of the day.
“I am the biggest law and order issue in the country at present because I have been stopped from speaking on the media”, Abidi said. Earlier, taking part in the discussion on the law and order situation in Karachi, Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan, the National Party’s Mir Hasil Bizenjo said that state should stop “backing armed groups as roots of every criminal in the country could be traced to state institutions”. staff report
