BISP’s Waseela-e-Taleem scheme launches today

* WB delegation appreciates accurate identification of beneficiary families

* Scheme termed revolutionary for promotion of education in country

ISLAMABAD: Waseela-e-Taleem initiative of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) will launch today (on Friday) aiming to provide education to the children of beneficiary families, Federal Minister and BISP Chairperson Farzana Raja informed delegation of the World bank. She expressed her hope that the scheme would prove to be a revolutionary step with regard to promotion of education in the country.

The BISP successfully targeted accurate identification of beneficiary families, which was important objective remarkably and thus able to bring positive change in the lives of millions of beneficiary families. These were the views expressed by a delegation of the World Bank (WB) during a meeting with the BISP Chairperson Farzana Raja at BISP Secretariat on Wednesday. The delegation comprised of WB Sector Director Jesco Hentschel, Sector Manager Pablo Gottert and WB Senior Social Protection Specialist Iftikhar Malik.

The delegation appreciated the programme to improve the lives of beneficiary families through its various schemes, which were introduced as ‘one shop stop idea’.

The delegation said that the data collected by the BISP could be beneficial for other initiatives in the social sector launched by various organisations as well as provinces and the BISP could play its role as a supportive programme for such endeavours.

Earlier, Farzana Raja said that the programme provides a comprehensive package of social protection to beneficiaries through ‘one window operations’.

She said with the assistance from the provinces and organisations like NADRA, PPAF and State Life Corporation etc, the programme proved to be a success.

Farzana Raja said that 22,000 youth were being imparted vocational/technical training under Waseela-e-Rozgar scheme of the BISP while 5,000 youth had already completed their courses. She said that the BISP had been approved by the both houses of the parliament and had been endorsed by all political parties in the parliament. The BISP chairperson added further that the World Bank and other organisations had played pivotal role in the success of the BISP. She said that transparency and effectiveness are the hallmark of the BISP and it was by this virtue that it had gained support from the WB and other international organisations. pr
