Petition filed in LHC to bring back politicians’ foreign assets

LAHORE: An amended petition was moved before the Lahore High Court on Saturday seeking for return of foreign assets of more than 23 Pakistani politicians, including President Asif Zardari, Yousuf Raza Gilani, Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and Imran Khan. The petitioner, Barrister Iqbal Jaffery had also included the name of Benazir Bhutto among respondents in the petition. Justice Khalid Mehmood Khan had directed the petitioner to file amended petition after the demise of Benazir Bhutto as directions could not be issued to her now. The petitioner moved the amended petition replacing the name of Benazir Bhutto with her heirs, including Asif Zardari, Bakhtawar, Aseefa and Bilawal. He submitted that the politicians had stashed away billions of rupees abroad putting the country in dire financial crisis. He said that the shifting of Pakistan’s assets to foreign banks caused unemployment, price hikes and poverty. He said that due to corrupt practices and misconduct of most of the respondents Pakistan had become a laughing stock in the world. He alleged that the respondents go abroad and stay in seven-star hotels having begging bowls in their hands. He requested the court that the details of the bank accounts and foreign assets of these politicians should be called for and pass order for bringing back in the country the national wealth. staff report
