Ex-OGRA chief’s arrest : SC summons Islamabad, Punjab IGs

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday summoned inspector generals of police of Islamabad and Punjab for showing laxity in arresting former chairman of Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) Tauqir Sadiq. NAB Deputy Prosecutor General Fozi Zafar told a three-judge bench that Sadiq had not be arrested so far, but efforts were on for his arrest. He claimed that police authorities were reluctant to cooperate with NAB in making the arrest. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry remarked that when NAB wanted to arrest anyone they bring that person from the US and Europe.

He said there were many examples that the culprits were brought from outside the country. Zafar told the bench that the investigation officer in the case needed necessary direction from the court to enhance the level of cooperation from Punjab and Islamabad police. He said it was quite possible to arrest Sadiq but due to lapses the information was leaked out and he escaped. The court directed the Islamabad and Punjab IGPs to improve their cooperation to arrest the former OGRA chief. The investigation officer was directed to submit a report about the case in the next hearing. The chief justice directed both the IGPs to ensure the arrest of Sadiq and adjourned the hearing of the case until November 19. hasnaat malik
