PM says attempts to weaken democracy will be thwarted

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said on Thursday that attempts by anti-state elements to weaken the democratic agenda would be thwarted.
Talking to parliamentarians, the prime minister said the democratic government is about to complete its term, adding that it would hold general elections in the country. Raja said that the present government has initiated numerous development projects across the country, especially in far-flung areas, to provide basic amenities to people. “Provision of amenities will improve their standard of living,” he added.
The prime minister urged parliamentarians to adopt a proactive approach and remain in contact with workers as well as the general public and sensitise them about the government’s development agenda. He also urged them to oversee and ensure timely completion of development projects in their constituencies.
Raja said the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has acquired international recognition as a success story. He said the government has already given a go ahead to expand BISP operations in other fields to target poverty.
