PML-N terms D8 summit a ‘futile exercise’
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Friday called the Developing-8 summit, which was held in Islamabad, a futile exercise because of “mismanagement and incompetence of the government”.
Talking to media persons at the Parliament House, Nisar also questioned Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s participation in the summit. Without naming him, Nisar said that participation of a 19-year-old boy, who has not even taken oath under the constitution of any official responsibility, in an important summit was a joke. “This is even a blatant defiance of national and international rules as well as norms,” he remarked.
He said that the D8 summit was a positive step, but “unfortunately the mismanagement and incompetence of the present government failed to make it a success”. “It was an opportunity for Pakistan to promote and highlight its positive impact across the world through this international event but ineptness and mismanagement of the rulers made the country laughing stock before the international community,” Nisar added.
He opined that convening of the summit in sensitive days of Muharram was reflection of the rulers’ incompetence. “The rulers overlooked the sensitivities of days of holy month of Muharram and instead of sending a positive message, it made a laughing stock of the country,” he said. The leader of the opposition also lambasted the government for not inviting Iranian President Mehmoud Ahmadinejad to address the joint session of parliament. “Inviting Egyptian President Mohamad Mursi to address the parliament’s joint sitting was a good step… but the rulers should come with an explanation as to why such an invitation could not be given to the old friend, Iranian president,” he asked.
Nisar also pointed out that the Presidency and President Asif Ali Zardari dominated the summit which was a sheer breach of rules and regulations, adding that as per the constitution, the prime minister is chief executive of the country and he is the only authority to host such an event.
