No need to call army in Sindh, says Qaim

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah said on Friday that the provincial authorities do not need to call army in Karachi so far, however, the army will remain in standby position.

Talking to media persons during his visit to different roads of the city, he said that the police and rangers were doing their job. The chief minister, who also holds portfolio of the home department, expressed his confidence in police and the rangers, and said that at least three bombs were defused in different parts of the city during last few days.

He hoped that the police and rangers would be able to control the situation. He said that the law enforcement agencies lack latest equipments, however, the government was working to fulfill their needs. He made an appeal to the general public for extending cooperation with the law enforcement agencies to ensure peace. “We have kept a vigilant eye on the situation, we don’t want to call the army in the city”, he added.

The chief minister visited different roads of the city including main II Chundrigar Road and MA Jinnah Road to monitor security arrangements made for the mourning processions on the 8th of Muharram.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Fayyaz Leghari on Friday visited the main procession of 8th Muharram-ul-Haram on MA Jinnah road and inspected security arrangements.

Talking to media persons, he said that all the security measures for the processions in the city and other parts of Sindh, were completed with the assistance of the procession administration.

He said three entering points were set up to enter the procession while nobody was allowed to enter from any other side, besides the link roads joining MA Jinnah road had already been closed.
“Around 500 personnel have been deployed outside the entry points,” he added.

Police will be on high alert during processions on 9th and 10th of Muharram.

Meanwhile, snap checking in all big cities have been started to avoid any untoward incident.

IGP said the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) had inspected the routes of processions, while searching through sniff dogs was also carried out.
