LHC orders construction of Kalabagh Dam
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered the Federal Government to go ahead with the construction of Kalabagh Dam in the light of the decisions arrived at in the 90s by the Council of Common Interest (CCI).
In a four-page short verdict, the LHC directed the Federal Government to implement the decisions of the Council of Common Interest (CCI) made as on September 16, 1991 and later on May 9, 1998 in connection with the (construction of) Kalabagh Dam.
The court ordered the government to resolve all the problems hampering the progress of Kalabagh Dam project. The Federal Government should resolve the political complication by exercising prudence, it added.
It further said that a committee having representation of the four-provinces had also endorsed the (construction of) Kalabagh Dam in 2004.
The court said the project of national interest must not be scrapped just because of differences in perceptions.
The CJ LHC in his remarks said under article 154 the federal government is bound to implement the proposals.
