Govt mulls new tax on CNG
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: The government is mulling to impose a new equitable tax on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to bring its price at par with petrol to phase out the CNG industry.
Adviser to the Prime Minister on Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain stated this while addressing a National Assembly Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Resources chaired by Engineer Tariq Khattak on Wednesday.
During the meeting, the committee expressed concerns over the closure of CNG stations and prevailing disagreement over price mechanism between OGRA and the APCNGA.
“The government is committed to gradually phase out CNG from the country as we don’t have sufficient gas reserves in the country,” the advisor said, adding the government is devising a policy for the purpose. He also criticised OGRA’s role as a regulator and said it had failed to deliver.
The legislators opined OGRA and the APCNGA stuck to their stances while the common man had been forced to wait in long queues for hours to get fuel for their vehicles.
