Kamran Murtaza elected SCBA president

LAHORE: Kamran Murtaza has been elected president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for the year 2013-14 after he secured 1,032 votes in annual elections of the top lawyers’ body. According to unofficial results, Murtaza defeated Professional Group’s Amanullah Kanrani who bagged 872 votes. The third candidate, Rab Nawaz Raja, bagged 58 votes. Murtaza was supported by Independent Group and Asma Jahangir Group’s candidates. Murtaza and Kanrani respectively secured votes 436-392 from Lahore, 219-118 from Islamabad/Rawalpindi, 115-141 from Karachi, 64-55 from Peshawar, 55-36 from Quetta, 28-16 from Abbottabad, 37-26 from Bahawalpur, 61-59 from Multan, 5-19 from Sukkur and 12-12 from Hyderabad. For the office of vice president, Rana Naeem Sarwar of Professional Group was declared winner after he secured 431 votes while his archrival Shah Abbas Iqbal Mian got 393 votes. For the seat of secretary, Asif Mehmood Cheema of Independent Group won with 913 votes and his rivals Azmatullah Chaudhry and Mian Muhammad Aslam secured 584 and 292 votes, respectively. Muhammad Sadiq Hidayatullah and Syed Sardar Hussain have already been elected unopposed vice presidents from Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Similarly, Raja Muqsit Nawaz Khan and Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan have also been elected unopposed additional secretary and secretary finance. Of 2,720 voters, 1,824 cast their ballots. The polling started at 8am and continued until 5pm with an hour break from 1pm to 2pm. Officials results of the election would be announced Sunday.
