Laser cataract surgery now in Pakistan

KARACHI: Highly sophisticated and advanced bladeless surgery of cataract, operated through laser technique, has been introduced in Pakistan at Post Graduate Teaching Centre, Hashmanis Hospital.

This was revealed during a ceremony held at a local hotel on Sunday. The surgery is said be carried out within a period of 10 minutes through its contemporary method.

Laser cataract surgery is the latest treatment modality in the world and first of such machine in the region is now installed in Karachi, said experts on the occasion.

Eyecare experts believe that almost 50 percent of people over the age of 40 years were suffering from cataract disease or cataract changes. This was observed by eminent Eye Specialist and Surgeon Dr Sharif Hashmani, Dr Akhter Jamal Khan, Dr Uzma Shaheen, Dr Azfar Nafees and others during an inaugural ceremony of laser cataract surgery. Prominent businessmen Aqeel Kareem Dhadhi, Arif Habib and well known ophthalmologist Dr Akhter Jamal Khan were guests of honour on the occasion.

Renowned eye specialist and surgeon Dr Sharif Hashmani talked about Lensx technology and said cataract surgery was very easy with maximum 99 percent accuracy with this bladeless latest treatment modality. It takes only five to 10 minutes for the treatment which is marvellous in the history of eye care throughout the world, he added.

“This latest treatment was introduced in 2010 in the West and developed countries and now we have this in Pakistan.”

Dr Hashmani informed that cataract was also called a ageing and congenital problem which is growing with the age in Pakistan like other countries of the world.

Prominent Ophthalmologist Dr Akher Jamal Khan said ageing, ultraviolet rays and polluted diet were some of the reasons of cataract. Cloudiness and low vision are the initial symptoms of this disease and should not be ignored, he added.

Dr Azfar Nafees said majority of the patients did not need to use glasses after undergoing laser cataract surgery. The ceremony was followed by ghazal night performed by Asif Mehdi, son of legendary Mehdi Hasan (late).
