PM’s intervention sought to end Nisar-opp standoff

ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah on Wednesday appealed to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to take steps for resolving the government-opposition standoff in order to end latter’s boycott of Senate session. Speaking on a point of order in the National Assembly, he pointed out that the opposition’s boycott had entered 9th day. In the National Assembly, a debate was going on and people were looking towards the Senate for its output and guidance for resolving the issues, he added. He said the controversy erupted in the last 97th session when the provincial government submitted a wrong answer to a question about the number of people killed in terrorist incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. At the 97th session, Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan had also expressed dissatisfaction over the killings but in the 98th session wrong figures were also re-submitted, he added. “There is no flexibility in the stance of Chaudhry Nisar... how could he initiate talks with the Taliban,” he said. Speaking in the House, Nisar said, “I rechecked the figures regarding casualties in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to acts of terrorism with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, which has maintained that the figures are correct.” He offered the House to constitute a committee to inspect the conduct of opposition members in the House on the day (October 30) when he gave these figures. Intervening in the arguments and arguments between the opposition leader and interior minister, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq asked Mahmood Khan Ackazai, PKMAP chief, to settle the issue between the treasury and opposition. The government side also appeared furious when opposition objected to inclusion of supplementary order of the day to lay Pakistan Protection Ordinance when the rules were already suspended to discuss the drone issue.
