Sectarian harmony to be maintained at all costs: Sharjeel

* Karachi commissioner for strict implementation of Ashura security plan

KARACHI: Sindh Information and Local Government Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Thursday morning paid a visit to various parts of the city to inspect security as well as cleanliness arrangements made on the eve of Muharram 9 and 10.

Senior officials of KMC and Local Government Department accompanied him.

The minister appreciated efforts made by the KMC and the Local Government Department with regard to cleanliness and providing possible facilities to mourners on the routes through which the main processions are scheduled to pass.

Memon told the officials that the police and Rangers have made foolproof security arrangements and in this regard over 25,000 law enforcement personnel have been deployed in the city. He expressed his optimism that with the help of peaceful and law-abiding people, all conspiracies would be foiled and sectarian harmony maintained at all costs.

Officials of the local government department informed the minister that in view of government directives, all necessary steps had been undertaken to improve state of cleanliness and provide adequate facilities to mourners in cities and towns across the province on Muharram 9 and 10.

Meanwhile, Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has said that the security plan and code of conduct for Ashura must be strictly implemented.

He said no entry other than notified entry points should be allowed to the main procession. He said this while visiting different areas along with Additional IG Karachi Shahid Hayat, here, said a statement on Thursday. The Commissioner reviewed security arrangements at imambargahs and venues of majalis.

He said strict security arrangements be ensured to protect ulema and participants of mourning processions and majalis of Muharram.

“No negligence will be tolerated in this regard,” he said, directing the officials concerned to prepare a security plan in consultation with the ulema and organisers of the majalis and mourning processions. He directed the administrative officials to remain in contact with the organisers. For contingency he also directed to ensure availability of fire tenders at sensitive areas that have been specified by the police department.
