Truckers call off strike as government accepts demands

KARACHI: The goods transporters on Sunday called off their 11-day long strike on conclusion of the successful talks with the Federal Finance Minister held at the Governor House here, Geo News reported.

A large number of trailers that stood unmoved at the port causing severe congestion have finally started to move out.

The federal finance minister had especially arrived in the city in view of the grave situation that the trade and industry was facing due to prolonged strike of the goods transporters.

Later, Federal Finance Minister told media that the notification relating to the reduction in taxes would be issued tomorrow (Monday).

The goods transporters had placed before the government several of their demands. The demand for withdrawal of the raise in tax by FBR was on top of the list, which was accepted by the finance minister and the relevant notification would be issued tomorrow.

Goods transporters’ president, Khalid Khan said that the matters relating to the payment of compensations for torched trailers on December 27 after the assassination of the former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, removal of the encroachment on KPT land given to them for parking of the trailers and seizure of containers by police for security reasons also came under discussions during the negotiations today.

Acting Governor, Agha Siraj Durrani, Federal Minister for ports and shipping, Kamran Michael, Sindh Chief Secretary, Sajjad Saleem Hotiana, Karachi Police Chief, Shahid Hayat and Commissioner Shoaib Siddiqui also represented the government in the meeting, while the Goods Transporters Association president, Khalid was leading the 30-member delegation of his team. Besides, Goods Transporters’ chairman, Ghulam Yasin and General Secretary Shoaib Khan also participated in the negotiation.
