Punjab orders judicial inquiry

RAWALPINDI: The government of Punjab has ordered a judicial inquiry into sectarian clashes in the city that left at least 10 people dead on Friday. The Punjab government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the violent incident in Rawalpindi, said Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah on Saturday. He said that the perpetrators would be brought to justice under the Anti-terrorism Act. The minister added that bodies of the victims have been handed over to the heirs. A curfew was imposed in Rawalpindi after violent clashes between two groups left at least 10 people dead on Friday. Taking notice of the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has ordered the Rawalpindi commissioner and regional police officer to submit a report into the clashes. The chief minister told an official meeting following the clashes that the government would ensure that the culprits for the violence are brought to justice. “We condemn the act of violence in Rawalpindi and sympathise with the aggrieved families. We will take the culprits to the task,” he said in a statement. Speaking in Lahore, the chief minister also said that a judicial inquiry had been ordered into Rawalpindi incident. He said he would request the Lahore High Court to appoint a senior judge for investigation into the tragedy. Friday’s clashes erupted when a procession of Shia mourners was on its way through Fawara Chowk in the garrison city. agencies
