Govt plans to build 500,000 houses in five years

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: A meeting of the Steering Committee for the Prime Minister's Low Income Housing Scheme was held at the Finance Ministry on Tuesday under Federal Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar.

"The government is committed to providing low cost housing to people with lower income in view of prime minister's promise," said the minister. "The Apna Ghar Limited will be a self sustainable housing project. It will be not only a charity project but a non listed public company formed to build 1,000 clusters of 500 houses each. 500,000 houses will be provided to the low income group of the country under this scheme."

Dar said that Apna Ghar Limited would be formed under the Companies Ordinance and the Ministry of Housing has been asked to complete all legal formalities with SECP by November 22.

"The seriousness of the government to provide low-cost housing to common man can be gauged from the fact that the first meeting to discuss the proposal was convened on September 12 and within a period of just over two months the Steering Committee for the Prime Minister's Low Housing Scheme has completed the framework for the registration of the company.

We hope that the company will be registered soon," said the minister. The next meeting to review recommendations of four working groups will be held on November 23.
