Journalists for reopening of consulates in Mumbai, Karachi

KARACHI: Journalists attending a seminar on Indo-Pak relationship at Karachi Press Club on Sunday sought early re-opening of consulates in Karachi and Mumbai.

Members of Mumbai and Karachi press clubs were of a unanimous opinion that people-to-people contact was pre-requisite for a strong and cordial relationship based on mutual confidence between the two countries.

The seminar with the theme 'What Media Can Do?' was addressed by Indian journalist Jatin Babu Desai, Mumbai Press Club President Gurbir Singh, Jyoti Punwani Sakrikar, Karachi Press Club President Muhammad Imtiaz Faran, Khursheed Abbasi and Amir Zia.

The speakers said journalist communities of the two countries must play a missionary role to eliminate mistrust and misgivings among people to help the region develop as a strong, prosperous and progressive socio-economic zone.

It was also suggested that the media in the two countries needed to adopt maturity and must avoid sensationalising issues on the pretext of nationalism.

Journalists from Pakistan referred to the spate of terrorism their country was currently facing.

The speakers also suggested issuance of a joint document by Karachi Press Club and Mumbai Press Club on recommendations to improve bilateral relationship between Pakistan and India at grassroots level, with specific reference to people-to-people contact.

A 14-member delegation from the Mumbai Press Club that arrived in Karachi on Saturday is on a weeklong visit to Pakistan and will leave the city for Islamabad today (Monday") and then to Lahore.

The delegation included Keetan Tanna, Santosh Andhale, Bankhele Pragati Bhimrao, Muhammad Wajeehuddin, Rebello Joel Bosco, Sahil Jpshi, Norma Astrid Godinho, Vignesh Lyer, Rachita Prasad, Sachin Dave and Shah Priti Alpesh. app
