Lawyers protesting outside SC clash with police
ISLAMABAD: Lawyers protesting outside the Supreme Court of Pakistan clashed with the police in the Federal Capital on Tuesday, Geo News reported.
Lawyers from Sargodha, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sahiwal and DG Khan were holding a sit-in, demanding the formation of benches in these divisions. They said the Punjab cabinet had approved formation of the benches, therefore, a notification to this effect should be issued.
Clashes with the police took place when lawyers tried to force their way into the Supreme Court. TV footage showed lawyers throwing stones, while the police baton charged the lawyers to drive them out from the premises of the apex court.
During clashes, the assistant commissioner, DSP and four policemen were injured. Several lawyers also sustained injuries.
Following the clashes, the police surrounded the Supreme Court while the lawyers continued with their protest. The Pakistan Bar Council has announced that a nationwide protest will be held against the police action.
