Govt names new chief justice
* Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani will take over as chief justice on December 12 after Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry steps downISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain on Wednesday approved the appointment of Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani as the country’s next chief justice.
The president approved the appointment on the recommendation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry will retire on December 11 following which the senior most judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Jillani, will take up the office on December 12.
Currently, Justice Jillani also holds the office of chief election commissioner.
Earlier, the Supreme Court registrar’s office had written to President Mamnoon Hussain seeking a timeframe for the oath taking ceremony.
According to reports, the ceremony will be held at the Presidency on December 12.
Justice Jillani took oath as judge of the Lahore High Court on August 7, 1994 and was elevated to the Supreme Court on July 31, 2004 where he served until imposition of the state of emergency on November 3, 2007.
After he refused to take fresh oath, he was made dysfunctional. After restoration of democracy and elected government in Pakistan, he again joined the Supreme Court as its judge in September 2009.
Former president Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf had imposed emergency rule in the country on November 3, 2007.
Musharraf stepped down as army chief later the same month and lost a general election in February 2008. agencies
