Charter for minorities’ rights presented

Staff Report

LAHORE: The minorities of Pakistan must be given equal rights and opportunities which is imperative to evolve a modern progressive Pakistan as envisioned by Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

This was said by Romana Bashir, executive director Peace and Development Foundation (PDF) during a press conference at the Lahore Press Club on Friday. Bashir said hate material against minorities, especially in textbooks, must be purged out as it was contributing in widening the gap between faith communities in Pakistan. “Provision of 20 extra marks to Hafiz-e-Quran during exams gives a clear edge to the Muslim students over non-Muslim students for admission in higher classes.

This provision, which is a blatant injustice in education system, needs to be redressed. We suggest eliminating this discrimination that 20 extra marks should be given to non-Muslim students on the basis of certificates provided by their religious institutions.

The criterion for nomination against these reserved seats for minorities should also be altered in a way that the respective communities could have their say in the process of such selections/elections,” she added.
