PTI to boycott Erdogan’s address

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan on Tuesday said that his party would stay away from the joint sitting of the parliament that would be addressed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on November 17.

Speaking to media, he said the PTI would continue the boycott of the parliament till the Supreme Court of Pakistan decides the Panama Papers case.

On Saturday the PTI announced that it would boycott the joint session of the parliament that it said is being held under a prime minister who faces corruption charges, drawing strong criticism within and outside the party.

On Monday a delegation of the PTI headed by Shah Mehmood Qureshi met Turkish ambassador to apprise him of the background of the decision to boycott the Erdogan’s address.

After the meeting, Qureshi told media that the ambassador advised the PTI to reconsider its decision to boycott the parliament. He said the PTI delegation assured the ambassador that the party would review its decision.

Meanwhile, Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique said PTI’s decision to boycott the joint session was deplorable.

“Imran Khan is becoming a threat to Pakistan. Visit of Chinese President was postponed due to PTI dharna. Then Imran Khan tried his best to make the CPEC controversial and later boycotted the joint session of the parliament on Kashmir,” said the minister while addressing a press conference.

“Indian media ridiculed Pakistan over Imran Khan’s decision to boycott the session on Kashmir,” he said.
