Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar released from jail

KARACHI: Imprisoned Karachi Mayor and senior leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Waseem Akhtar was released from the Central Jail on Wednesday after an Anti-Terrorism Court granted him bail.

A large number of MQM workers along with senior members of the embattled party were waiting outside the detention facility as the mayor came out. Akhatar waved to the party workers as they chanted slogans and showered him with rose petals.

An ATC judge approved his bail against a surety bond of Rs500,000 in the last of the 39 cases against him. The last case in which he was granted bail pertains to the mayor’s alleged involvement in the treatment of terrorists at the former petroleum minister Dr Asim Hussain’s hospital. He was arrested on July 19 from a court where he was attending a hearing.

Akhtar visited Mazar-e-Quaid where he laid a floral wreath and later proceeded to the MQM-P’s temporary office in PIB Colony since the law enforcement agencies have sealed MQM famous Nine Zero Headquarters following party chief's anti-Pakistan remarks.

"I will do everything for the betterment of city and to fulfill mandate entrusted upon me," said the Mayor while talking to the media at the Mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azm Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

"We will take every measure possible to resolve the problems of city," he said and called for an end to "fake cases" lodged against his supporters. He vowed to serve the people of Karachi without any discrimination and thanked his party workers for encouraging him though his detention.
