Still many Waseem Akhtars languishing in jails: Khawaja Izhar
KARACHI: MQM leader Khawaja Izharul Hassan urged authorities to release all political prisoners, as he said that one Waseem Akhtar had been freed yet many others were still languishing in jails, on Wednesday.
Speaking to media personnel, Khawaja Izhar-ul-Hassan said that while it was a momentous occasion that Karachi's elected Mayor Waseem Akhtar was finally being released on bail, he stated that there were many others like him languishing in jails.
He questioned why the city was still in a bad state when peace and tranquility had been restored to the provincial capital.
"There is peace in Karachi. Why hasn't any development taken place?" he questioned. "The problems of the people relating to water and garbage collection should be solved," he added.
He urged Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah to grant local government representatives their rightful powers.
"Sindh Chief Minister should allow the local government representatives to exercise their rightful powers," he said. "The Chief Minister should stop being so stubborn."
Khawaja Izhar-ul-Hassan said that if the problems of the people were not addressed, then protests and sit-ins would take place in the city.
Regarding MQM Pakistan, Izhar-ul-Hassan said that the party would open its doors for anyone who wished to join it, even Musharraf or Ishratul Ebad Khan.
"MQM's doors are open for everyone, including the former president or the former governor," he said.
He said that if the party leadership were to resign, then it would be replaced by someone from within and not outside.
On Wednesday, an anti-terrorism court approved Karachi mayor Waseem Akhtar's bail against a surety bond of Rs500,000. The mayor has now received bail in all 39 cases against him, including facilitating hate speech, involvement in May 12 riots, and abetting the treatment of terrorists.
