NA rejects increase in govt employees’ pensions

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly (NA) on Tuesday rejected a resolution seeking increased pensions of government employees.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) National Assembly Member (MNA) Nighat Parveen remarked that government should take steps to equalise the pension of government employees with Rs 50,000 pay.

She said that the lower grade’s employees’ salaries were very low and after completion of 30 years of their service they were not able to even construct their home. If the salaries are not increased then at least increase their pensions to eradicate their problems, she said.

Another MNA, Shaista Pervaiz, said that the employees of grade 17 and above had ‘fruitful’ salaries with good pensions but the lower grade employees are neglected.Parliamentary Financial Secretary Rana Afzal said that the proposed idea was not possible because the pensions increase according to the employees’ salaries – and the government employees’ salaries are far greater than

The NA’s deputy speaker – after listening to arguments of both the sides – took all the remaining stakeholders' suggestions but in spite of majority’s vote in the right of increasing pensions – on which the speaker rejected the resolution.
