ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday granted the federation 10 days for the appointment of the new National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman.
A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and consisting of Justice Tariq Pervaiz and Justice Ghulam Rabbani, was hearing the petition by Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq for the NAB chairman’s appointment.
The CJ directed that new prosecutor general should not appointed until the appointment of NAB chairman.
The federation, through the AG, on Wednesday sought three-weeks time from the SC for the appointment of the new NAB chairman. The AG, in the petition, said the process of consultation was currently underway for the appointment of the chairman.
The SC had on Monday during the proceedings of the NRO implementation case, had directed the government to appoint a new NAB chairman by September 30. The deadline given by the apex court expired on Thursday.
The apex court on September 1, in its reserved judgment, had ordered the government to appoint a new NAB chairman within 30 days. The court had declared the appointment of the acting chairman and NAB prosecutor general ‘illegal’ and directed the government to appoint a new chief in one month.
