MQM rejects imposition of ‘flood tax’

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has rejected and vehemently criticised the imposition of ‘Flood Surcharge’ as it would further burden the salaried class while asking the government to impose the new tax on the agricultural income of feudal lords.

This was conveyed by a four-member delegation of MQM led by Coordination Committee Deputy Convener and MQM’s parliamentary leader in the National Assembly, Dr Farooq Sattar to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in a meeting in Islamabad on Thursday. The delegation including former city nazim Mustafa Kamal, Federal Minister Babar Ghori and MQM’s deputy parliamentary leader in National Assembly Haider Abbas Rizvi met the prime minister in his parliamentary chambers on his invitation.

Stressing the need for concrete steps to meet the challenges faced by the country in the flood aftermath, the delegation opposed the imposition of flood surcharge and remarked that the new tax would put an additional burden on the salaried class. staff report
