Democracy strong enough to protect itself, says Zardari
* President says political orphans who have joined hands with political actors to destabilise government are doomed to fail
* Parliament can defend any undemocratic act against democracy
BADIN: Democracy in the country is strong enough to protest itself, a private TV channel quoted President Asif Ali Zardari as saying on Friday.
Zardari, while addressing a public meeting to distribute cheques among the poor under the Benazir Income Support Programme, said political orphans had joined hands with political actors to destabilise the representative government but they were doomed to be frustrated.
The president’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar said Zardari also pledged to lift the poor and destitute from the generational poverty trap through the BISP. The president said the PPP, which believed in democracy, had rendered numerous sacrifices for the cause of democracy and would continue to strive for further strengthening of democratic institutions in the country.
Zardari said the political actors and orphans must realise that Pakistan was a country of 170 million people and not an organisation of an international bank, adding, “The PPP government has been formed by the people, who are ready to foil any conspiracy against the democratic government.”
Parliament: Zardari said he had transferred the president’s powers to parliament for strengthening democracy, adding, “Parliament can now defend any undemocratic acts against democracy.”
He said that the government would soon initiate plans for rapid development of Badin district, which was a PPP stronghold. The president said foreign investors would be invited to establish their industries in different sectors, particularly energy, in order to improve the socio-economic condition of the common people of the district.
Zardari said, “The PPP is deeply rooted among the masses as the poor countrymen believe that its leadership has always struggled for their rights even while in power or as the opposition. Therefore, the political actors and orphans should avoid hatching conspiracy or making negative propaganda as all their efforts will be fruitless.”
The president said that the party’s struggle for the rights of the people would continue, adding that the government was striving to combat terrorism and save the lives of the people.
Zardari was critical of the propaganda by those who were levelling allegations that the government is supporting feudalism in the country. daily times monitor/app
