NEPRA increases power tariff by two percent
* Upward revision in power tariff across the board for all consumers in eight distribution companies, KESC
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) increased power tariff by two percent for eight distribution companies and the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) with immediate effect from Friday.
NEPRA reviewed the tariff for the fourth quarter of 2009-10 under powers conferred by sub-section 4 of Section 31 of the Regulation of Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electric Power Act 1997, according to a notification.
NEPRA’s quarterly determination for the fourth quarter 2009-2010 is on the higher side when compared with the government levied tariff for all consumers.
It was informed that the increases usually were determined after power generation companies filed a request for revision in the tariff position, which were normally heard and disposed of – by NEPRA – through public hearings.
In order to reduce the gap between NEPRA’s determined tariff and consumers-end tariff, the government had decided to maintain a balance, in public interest, and to pass on only two percent revision in power tariff.
The government therefore notified a two percent upward revision in power tariff across the board for all categories of consumers in eight distribution companies and KESC, it further said.
It may be noted that in order to make the power sector solvent, financially viable and able to serve the public, the government had notified the said tariff increase to be made effective from October 1.
