US envoy apologises for Pakistani soldiers’ death

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W Patterson on Wednesday extended an apology to the country on behalf of the American people for the cross-border NATO airstrike on September 30, which resulted in the death of three Pakistani Frontier Corps soldiers.

Ambassador Patterson said that a joint investigation into the incident had established that the US helicopters had mistaken the Pakistani soldiers for insurgents they had been pursuing. “We extend our deepest apology to Pakistan and the families of the Frontier Scouts,” she said.

The ambassador noted that the US would coordinate with Pakistan in the future to prevent the recurrence of such tragic accidents.
