Govt determined to provide prompt, reliable postal services to people: PM


ISLAMABAD, Oct 9 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has stated that the government will support every move towards providing prompt, reliable and quality postal services to the people of Pakistan.“With the advent of fast communication tools such as courier services, internet and mobile phones, there were serious doubts as to how the Postal Sector would survive in the wake of the information explosion.“I am extremely happy to note that the postal sector has adapted itself to technology-driven changes and successfully survived in a competitive environment,” Gilani said in his message on the occasion of World Post Day, observed every year on October 9.

He said the recent past has recorded profound and unexpected growth in the postal industry, adding, automation, diversification and a gradual shift to financial services have helped the postal industry meet customers’ demand and maintain a decent share of the market.
“I am confident that Pakistan Post is utilizing all its resources to respond better to the present-day customer needs by operating an efficient and effective postal network at affordable rates”, Gilani said and wished Pakistan Post a bright future and a vibrant role as a partner in the national development.
The Prime Minister extended his heartiest congratulations to officers and staff of Pakistan Post on the 137th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which is one of the world’s oldest organizations.
Universal Postal Union has not only strengthened cooperation amongst the nations but has also been instrumental in promoting the concept of global village declaring the whole world as “a single postal territory”, he said and added, “It has fostered linkages for enhanced cooperation and collaboration amongst the nations”.
The Prime Minister said,” the nature of the global financial and political system is such that the nations cannot progress in isolation, adding, interdependence is a key to ensure sustainable growth and development of any nation.
“This calls for plugging gaps and fostering understandings on a whole range of issues among peoples of the world. The role of UPU in bringing the nations together on a charter of shared human values is appreciable”, he added.
The Prime Minister said UPU’s role has been of fundamental importance as it has provided consultative, technical and financial assistance to the developing countries in modernizing their postal operations and networks.
“It has prescribed quality standards of services to evolve an efficient global postal system”, he added.
