UN Secretary General’s special envoy calls on PM

ISLAMABAD, Oct 12 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has assured UN Secretary General’s new Special Envoy for Assistance to Pakistan Ambassador Rauf Engin Soysal, who called on him here at the PM House on Tuesday, of his and government’s complete support for making his assignment a resounding success.The Prime Minister welcomed the appointment of Ambassador Soysal and recalled his very fruitful tenure as Ambassador of Turkey from 2007 to 2009. The Prime Minister said his return to Pakistan in the new capacity was return to his second home.

Ambassador Soysal while handing over a letter from the United Nations (UN) Secretary General addressed to the Prime Minister about his appointment, said that it was a great honour and privilege for him to be chosen at the recommendations of the Government of Pakistan to be the Special Envoy of UN Secretary General for Assistance to Pakistan.
He considered the new assignment as a sacred responsibility and intended doing his best to deliver on the confidence reposed on him by the UN Secretary General and the Government of Pakistan.
He said his main focus would be on coordinating efforts of all the relevant UN agencies for efficient, equitable and transparent use of assistance in relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts of the Government of Pakistan.
He apprised the Prime Minister that he has already visited southern Sindh including the affected areas of Dadu district to observe the situation, first hand.
He plans to be fully functional while based in Islamabad after his return from Brussels where he would participate in Friends of Democratic Pakistan (FoDP) ministerial meeting.
